It’s a Friday link up, it’s a Friday link up!
You have to sing that. Or shout it. Or a sing-shout combination. At the top of your lungs. Because it’s Friday.
[You know I’m going to be one of “those” mothers when my kid are older – the kind that embarrasses her kids by singing show tunes in public.]
As we do every Friday, I’m linking up with Mar from Mar on the Run and Courtney from Eat Pray Run, DC. And other great people are linking up below – check out some new blogs by clicking around to other Friday Five posts!
Today I’m talking about What’s Exciting in 2014!
1. SOAS Racing 2014 Brand Ambassador Team. I don’t think I’ve even mentioned this yet except on my Facebook page, but my big exciting news for 2014 is that last Friday I was accepted on the SOAS Racing 2014 Brand Ambassador Team! SOAS is a women’s-specific triathlon clothing brand that I had drooled over in the past, but because I was losing weight and changing sizes so rapidly last year, I didn’t invest in a nice tri kit. I pieced things together that I found on sale racks or online, aside from one pricey tri top I bought and promptly got too small for before my race. This year I need something that fits and has style, and I was so thrilled to be accepted. I can hardly contain my excitement and I can’t believe I get to wear this awesome gear this year at all my races.
2. ZOOMA Annapolis Ambassador. Another fun piece of news – I’m a race ambassador for ZOOMA Annapolis on May 31, 2014! I am SO excited to run the half marathon distance, and it’s the perfect time of year. Annapolis is such a gorgeous city – I can’t wait!
ZOOMA is a women’s race series that encourages all women to participate, and I love their mission: “To inspire women to live healthy, happy, & active lives.” My buddies Courtney and Mar are also race ambassadors, along with several other awesome ladies. We’ll have some training runs and other lead-up events in the DC/MD area that will be fun.
I have a discount code for 10% off either the half marathon or the 10K race registration: ANNAMB5. Come run with us, we’ll have a great time!
3. Active Life DC Featured Blogger Interview. If you missed my little mention the other day, you can check me out on Active Life DC – I was the featured blogger the other day. And if you don’t subscribe to their newsletter or check out their website, you should! They’re chock full of great info about being active in the DC area.
4. Siblings Running. In recent years, my siblings and their spouses have all started getting in badass shape. It is seriously amazing. My brother, sister-in-law, sister, and brother-in-law are all going to be training for a Spartan Race this August. I decided not to sign up because I have my first Olympic triathlon a week or two later, and it was so sad to decline because I would love to do the race with them. But I will be there to cheer them on and we’ll do some training runs together! I used to beg people to run with me, and now they’re all runners! I’m so excited that they’re all finally I-Signed-Up-For-Thatters too!
He has peanut, tree nut, sunflower, sesame, and possibly lentil allergies – 2013 was a really life-changing year as we learned how to manage his food allergies. We recently had an appointment and further allergy testing with Dr. Wood at Johns Hopkins, who is what I consider the allergy guru in the United States. Based on the test results and his recommendations, we are proceeding with an oral food challenge for sunflower.
An oral challenge is when the child eats a small amount of the suspected allergen. If he tolerates it, he gets another dose, then another, until he’s cleared of the allergy (or has a reaction, in which case we continue on avoiding sunflower at all costs). It is all done at the allergist’s office in a controlled environment where they are trained to spot a reaction coming on, and how to administer aid if a reaction occurs. Please don’t ever try this at home if you have or suspect a food allergy!
The sunflower allergy is the most complicated of his allergies to manage since it’s in so many products (you would be surprised!). He doesn’t really eat packaged food, I make all his bread from scratch, and we don’t even feed him any food that has “natural flavors” or “spices” on the ingredients list. If he passes this challenge today, we will be home free with sunflower! In two weeks, he has a sesame oral challenge. Wish us luck!
