Happy end of 2015!
As the year comes to a close, I’m trying to end it strong. Because now that the crazed rush of December is over, I’m catching up on things at home, working out consistently, and being more consistent with healthy eating. Save for a few treats in the office kitchen, which are killing my efforts. But I’m working on that.
Christmastime was perfect with the kids! We hit the “sweet spot” with the kids this year – the oldest still believes in Santa Claus and the youngest was finally “getting it”. So they were all so excited. It was incredible to hear them wake up, scurry downstairs, check the post-Santa-scene, run back up the stairs, then burst into my room and shout “Mom, wake up – SANTA CAME!!!!”
On Saturday, I was in a total post-Christmas coma at home. I spent time with the kids and just relaxed all morning. No working out, no energy to do anything. It was a mad rush at work and at home to do so many things before the holiday that I was just burned out.
Oh – I’m starting the new year with a new ‘do. I was ready for a change at the last haircut in September but still had a triathlon or two on the calendar and didn’t want to have to figure out swim-cap-to-bike-helmet-to-running-visor system with shorter hair. I’m ready now.
Don’t be fooled, it hasn’t looked like this since Saturday when I walked out of the salon.
On Sunday, my half marathon training group did 10 hilly miles and it was fabulous. I’m a pace group coach for the 9 minute mile group and we’re supposed to keep the long runs at about 9:30. It was a hilly run but we did pretty well! Some members had a faster average but I ran back a few times to run with everyone in the group at various points so I think we were basically 9:30.
It’s a really different experience pacing people to their goals and I really enjoy it. The weather has been really mild and I couldn’t believe I was in shorts and a t-shirt. I had to shed the “Coach” shirt 1 mile in and run with it around my waist. Slightly annoying but worth it.
Hello, tri shorts tan lines!
And how awesome is my new shirt – my parents picked out this awesome Under Armour shirt that I could have picked out myself, it was perfect.
After the run, I spent time getting things done at home and then I spent a lot of time in the kitchen. My husband and I did some meal planning and I prepped a Paleo crock pot meal for the next day (Korean Short Ribs from Nom Nom Paleo), made a healthy dinner of Vietnmaese Lettuce Cups from the Nom Nom Paleo Cookbook, and also prepped breakfast for the week. Breakfast this week is a Paleo breakfast casserole from PaleOMG and just subbed ground turkey for the sausage.
I’m not eating Paleo or doing the Whole 30 again, but I am trying to step up my whole foods/clean eating. Why wait for January 1 to start living healthier? I missed the creative, delicious, veggie-heavy recipes I cooked while doing those Whole 30s and my husband is also trying to eat better, so we decided to be better about planning.
On Monday I took a rest day. I needed a chill morning with the kids, and a relaxing evening. My husband and I have been watching The Man in the High Castle on Amazon via our Fire Stick, which is really interesting.
I met my dad for a cycling class on Tuesday morning at 5:45am. He’s recently turned 70 and recently retired and this is what he chooses to do at 5am – ROCK STAR!
It was an okay class at our gym – not as intense as the other cycling classes I’ve been doing. But a great way to star the day. I was home before my kids woke up!
Tonight (Wednesday), I have a hill workout with the training group. We’re going to attack some hills!
This isn’t really a 2015 wrap up, just my regular weekly recap. But I have some thoughts about the new year coming!
I’m figuring out my 2016 and have some big races on the books. Particularly, Ironman 70.3 Atlantic City and Ironman 70.3 North Carolina/Beach 2 Battleship.
I need to plan out the rest of the season but I’m trying to avoid big goals in the early part of the season because I will be traveling a lot for work.
More on my travels soon – basically I’ll be in Europe most of February. I got a GoPro for Christmas so I’m going to learn to use it this weekend! I’m excited for fun action shots and videos, and my Instagram will be hopping!
Have a great New Year!
Are you doing any reflecting at the end of the year or just charging straight into 2016?
